From Turkish kitchens to North Carolina.
We are not bringing an exotic food to America. We are sharing a tradition that has brought people together for generations.
Tarhana has deep roots in Turkish home cooking. In many families, it has traditionally been prepared in larger batches, dried and kept ready for the colder months. The making is shared, the batch is shared, and the bowl is shared.
Soup & Smile takes that habit seriously. We are building a small take-away soup shop in North Carolina around one dish, made properly, with bread baked in our own oven. And we are building it with a second purpose from the first day rather than as an afterthought.

Because the truth is simple: one bowl of soup can feed a person, but one human connection can change a life. Food is the easiest place for that connection to start. Nobody has to explain themselves to accept a bowl of soup.
A cultural bridge works in both directions. Turkish tradition gives us the recipe and the custom of the shared bowl. North Carolina gives us neighbours, tradespeople, employers and volunteers. What happens in between is the actual business.

Everyone deserves a warm meal and a chance to move forward. That is the whole idea, and everything else on this site is just the practical version of it.

A soup shop is a small business before it is anything else. Ours is meant to create good food, local relationships, local jobs, community support and genuine cultural exchange — in the neighbourhood where it stands.
